Traditional Challah

recipe from Howard's father's mom, Buba Esther Mittledorf Messing

  1. Dissolve yeast in water; let rest for 5 minutes.
  2. Add salt, sugar, and oil.
  3. Blend in egg and half the flour.
  4. Slowly add rest of flour, stir until dough is stiff.
  5. Turn out on lightly floured board, knead until satiny smooth.
  6. Place in greased bowl. Cover with a clean cloth.
  7. Let rise in warm place until doubled (over 1 hr).
  8. Punch down, turn out on lightly floured board.
  9. Cut into equal portions, roll into strips about 1 ½ feet long.
  10. Braid strips and seal ends (3 per loaf).
  11. Place on greased sheet, let rise for 1 hr.
  12. Brush with leftover egg and bake at 350º for 1 hour
